It's something i wondered about while wandering around one upside-down country. They have public washing machines (which is unusual for me), and most of them are the top-loading models (which is also something i only seen in cartoons before).
And something i read on this forum made me remember that wondering.

So, what kind of washing machine do you have, and where are you having it?

The top-loader kind:

Or the side-loaded kind?:

Great poll Artlav, are you going to do other domestic appliances? I've voted already!

Did you see a Hills Hoist as well?

Top loaders are popular because they a big and you can open them mid cycle.
Side loaders use less water and are becoming more popular.

Public washing machines are generally more common in the cities and tourist areas.

Most home have a laundry room for the washing machine along with a sink and a dryer (For rainy days).

I think the 'both of them' option was not needed to be added here, as it's multiple choice poll.

Sorry to disagree tl8, my front-loader(side-loader!, wouldn't the door be on the side, not the front?) sits in the kitchen, but I'm in a one-bed flat, some of the time.

Well, how much off-topic is too much off-topic?
A washing machine can be a simulation for centrifuge, which is about artificial gravity, which is related to space flight. So it's not too far from Orbiter after all.

Possibly, but i haven't observed one explicitly.

Well, i don't post polls here often, so please forgive the overkill. :)

Well, cookers would be a good choice, nearest most of us get to a gas-generator...?

Mine is North Sea, I can sometimes detect a wiff of propane, thats when I open the window.

You have a bigger country, we haven't the room here, especially with the gerbils, and parakeets.

I have had two different types of machine.

One, during the 90s, was a huge and heavy top loading Thomson. It was a very dangerous appliance with a vertically spinning metal drum with its axis perpendicular to the machine (just imagine a meat-grinding version of a hamster wheel in a steel box). The cover to this heavy metal drum was spring loaded and it will threaten to chop off your fingers every time.

I have no idea why the family bought it because there are much smarter and more efficient Japanese top loader types, with larger drums that spin horizontally giving far more "overload' capacity and of course, its fun to open it while its turning slowly in the rinse cycle and toss my little pillows into it :D

These Japanese top loaders with their plastic drums can tolerate massive overloading and abuse, something which the supposedly more sophisticated and much more expensive Thomson didn't take well to. It developed leaks real quick and rusted away faster than (insert the crappiest rust-prone car you know here).

When I was growing up we had a top loader. My parents liked it for the safety aspect as a small child couldn't get to the top of the washing machine, open it and fall in - This is in the days before the modern gizmos had all the locking eletronics and sensors don't forget!

today I've got a side loader.

Front loader. I don't load washing into it from the sides, top or back partly because the door's in the front and partly because the cabinets it's recessed into get in the way.

Actually, in these parts, most public machines are front-loaders, whereas our home machine is a top-loader.

Its odd the winning vote is a side-loader, I would call it a front-loader. Just goes to show folks...

How about (front-)side-loader? :p
(But then, it could be also (top-)side-loader.)

I was expecting a pattern like Americans having topload and the rest sideload. Seems now to be maybe sort of Americans and Australains have topload.
And laundromats are a bit of a necessity around here, and particularly at apartments. Washing machines and dryers can be too expensive for many people. Besides, it's handy if your own breaks. :p
