I'm slowly getting back to my meshing (stretching the rusty skills again), and I decided that before I dive back into Brighton Base 2012, I'd do something related to my personal Taepodong Project back in 2010-2011. Here is a screenshot of the UNHA-3 (with hodgepodge launch tower) that I've built, using Vinka's MULTISTAGE.DLL, and it flies pretty well--the first and second stages fall exactly where they are announced by NOKOR to fall, but the third stage will orbit (based on the guidance.txt file I developed for it).

If anyone is interested at all in this, sound off so I can continue this as a side project.

[opinion] I think you should stick with it. North Korea may not be a "power-player" when it comes to space launch capability, but the UNHA rocket is relevant to the times.

In addition, I think many Orbinauts have a future-fantasy (or altenate reality) idea where nations work together for the betterment of mankind. In which case NK's rocket would be seen as a contribution towards that end, instead of saber-rattling.[/opinion]

Are you going to work on the whole launch site? Asia's east coast/Southwest Asia is ripe for developing launch facilities.

Thanks for the feedback. Well as most of you know, I'm no programmer, which is why I am forced to use things like multistage.dll just to build rockets. I do dream of one day working with someone who can do a CVEL-type implementation for these series of rockets and similar. Perhaps also, someone who knows UCGO/uMMU well even just for smaller projects like this. I think they're interesting, informative, and fun as well.

Are you also developing the Iranian rocket(s)? Last time I heard their cubesat launch vehicle has scored at least a 75% success rate, much higher than the Falcon 1..... :p

Do we want it? OH, YEAH! Keep working on it. If nothing else, we can place the Early R-7 Missions warhead on it and do a possible test of it's range. :)

Ok guys thanks again for the interest.

Here is the current status of this project.

1. I have the 1st, 2nd, 3rd Stage modelled (textures and meshes), and is launch-capable (via Vinka's multistage.dll, with that alternate *.dll that was created to help it work with Orbiter 2010). However, 3rd stage is now basically a "dummy"--no payload. I still need verification if the Unha-3's physical dimensions (height, length etc.) are correct--I am still a little unsure of this.

2. I created a very basic launch tower and pad (mesh only, no textures yet), very rough and I don't think it's accurate yet, but good enough to record snapshots and videos hehe. The launch site (Sohae) does NOT have land tiles. There is a base CFG file for it.

3. I painstakingly (after repeated trials) created a launch guidance.txt file to the best of my ability, to enable the 3rd stage to get to orbit, and to ensure that the 1st and 2nd stages fall in the areas designated by NOKOR space agency as the impact zones. All three stages follow this guidance file beautifully, except that the intended orbit (according to experts) would be a polar 500x500 circular one, but right now, my 3rd stage only manages a 200x1200 elliptical polar orbit.

So this is the state of this project at the moment, and I can zip up all the related files and make it available for download. If you're interested, you may download it, check it out and start creating a list of suggestions for it. I'll start the list now, for I do have some wishes for it:

1) If anyone can help making a Kwangmongsong-3 satellite, to be used as payload, this will be appreciated. I can do it myself but a bit swamped at the moment, so perhaps if someone can help out with this, it would be nice.

2) Land tiles! I can take care of the terrain mesh immediately surrounding the area, but I lack skills in land tiles. Would be nice to have land tiles of the Sohae area.

3) Helping to refine the guidance.txt file so that the 3rd stage can attain that 500x500km orbit.

4) If anyone wants to help "populate" the area around Sohae base with accurate buildings (i.e. ramps, assembly, fuel depot, etc. based on Google Earth images and/or other sources), then your help will be greatly appreciated.

Well, that's it for now. I hope to package everything in a few hours and make the zip available here. I think this would be a nice project, one that is not hurried or under pressure, something we can all go back to every now and then to tweak/improve on.

IMHO, you should just release what you have now, while this is still in the news. You can make updates later. What was in your YouTube looked just fine.

Ok, file attached "unha-3.zip" hopefully everything is there, but just to make sure, first download and install multistage and install that, then unzip this on top of that. Send feedback here if you run into snags thanks.

You did a very nice job!

Does anyone else notice with multistage3, that the spent stages tumble around a point that can't possibly be the center of gravity? Is there a way to fix this?

No, that could be my fault--I deliberately modelled the meshes "off axis" (i.e. centered around the end points) because I was running out of time trying to "mate" the meshes together. Don't worry I'll try to fix that soon--but first I need help in verifying if the dimensions of the rocket are indeed realistic WITHIN Orbiter (i.e. scaling).

Orbiter base maker can get reasonable surface tiles for the launch base. You can get the position of the main building block form photos and google maps, and them position them in OBM. The landsat image is good enough for that.

I've noticed that too on certain addons. It's a problem with the mesh position, IIRC.

The tower plainly sucks (I know, it does) I threw it all together before I left for work this morning. If somebody wants to improve on it, they have my permission. The tower and its orientation are correct, along with the three buildings beside the tower.

EDIT: Oh, and if you change the COG in the unha3.ini file to 19.5, it sits nicely on the pad I made.

I just tried it, and I'm pretty sure that some meshes are missing from your zipped file......

Nice one jedi! Will check it out! :)

I think I'm gonna make a terrain mesh for it. If you noticed the photos of the area, and in Google Earth, the pads are nestled in some hills. Will try to get that look.
