Hi,
I saw this video about the Dzhanibekov Effect (Intermediate Axis Theorem)

I wondered if Orbiter would reproduce this rather entertaining behaviour of a wingnut rotating in space, and of course it does - very well :)

Here's a simple .cfg, mesh and scenario of a wingnut with Prime Moments of Inertia 0.12 0.26 0.22, rotating in space with angular velocity 360deg/sec around Z axis and 0.1deg/sec around Y axis.

Cheers,
Brian

I had the exact same idea when I first saw that video, but I totally lack the skills to create any "ship" to demonstrate this.

Very many thanks for putting this up!

I wonder what martins would be doing now, if he got one € every time this behavior was reported as a bug.

I second that. Many thanks for the link, it is a very good explanation!

I caught myself wondering if Orbiter's behavior in this regards is really correct in the past as well. I noticed this with e.g. the Deltaglider, and if I'm not mistaken, Martin even got some question on this and explained it in mathematical terms.
But I have to admit that only after seeing the above video I really grasp it.

It is even in the stock scenarios: "Delta-glider/The rotation model"
