On YouTube, there are two videos (Part I & Part II) of a Russian Spaceflight Simulator called Project R-7. All the video descriptions are in Russian.

Like Orbiter, it is completely free.

Download Link (Untested & In Russian)

Part I:

Part II:

Thoughts?

Pretty good for it's early versions, but it needs a lot of polishement to get to Orbiter level. But what it really need is some interest and maybe more developers to make add-ons(if it's moddable).

Shame, Project R-7 seems to support collision detection as well.

Google returns no results other than this thread, the video and igels Project R-7 on Orbit Hangar Mods.

EDIT: I'm going to try to talk to the video uploader (he is the maker of Project R-7), and see if he can re-upload it.

I didn't watch the video... but the graphic of the Earth there looks like... well, it looks like it came out of Orbiter 2001. ;)

You always have to start somewhere... :)

Here and now
Am I the only one to notice that this seems to be a two dimensional physics engine? Everything appears to be automagically on the same plane, and the instruments didn't appear to show any information on RInc or nodes.

While it is nice to see people give things a try, and seems they are off to a nice start, I think it is safe for me to say I will stick with Orbiter.

Do like the use of the SSM2007 music however.

I love how the a lot of the sounds were the exact same ones that Orbiter uses...

I dug a little bit of info on the project. This is what the game designer writes about it:

Let me tell more about this project.

This simulator was created specially for "Sozvezdiye" competition that is held for school students of different ages. This is their website: www.olimpsozvezdie.ru I have won the competition.

The idea was to make a simplified version of Orbiter. You launch from Earth on a Soyuz-FG, a development of a famous R-7. Then you acquire Earth's orbit, dock to Mir station, and after that return to Earth. The archive contains a description that was sent to the competition committee. It contains information on controls and displays. If necessary, I can quote key mapping here. I have made the project from ground up, except for the music. :) The texture of Earth I took from Internet, the station's texture made myself, using photographs, because nothing fitting was on the 'net. That's why it's a bit ugly. Models are all mine.

Question from someone: Do you plan to develop the project?

No. This is my first serious project, and I'm not happy with how it was structured. That's why it's very difficult to improve. In addition, it was just a competition-aiming venture. But I want to create a new, more realistic, space simulator.

The designer is quite smart to see the limits of his work, a rare quality TBH.
