TransX Problem with Earth-Europa flyby-Jupiter Aerocapture

I'm trying to recreate the outbound flight of the Leonov (from the movie 2010) to Jupiter with a near approach to Europa to allow a satellite launch. I can plot and fly an approach to either Jupiter or Europa using TransX with no problem. But if I fly to Jupiter, Europa is too far away for the satellite (with limited delta-V) to intercept it. So I set up a 4 stage trip ending with an approach to Europa. The closest approach~300-500 Km though I launch the probe about a day before periapisis in order to plot the aerocapture approach to Jupiter so the Leonov never gets that close. These are the starting conditions:

TransX selects Slingshot plan when I attempt to plot the flight from Europa to Jupiter for aerocapture. Though I'm able to direct fly through our system, I haven't tried any slings yet. I looked through a few threads on the forum ( http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=27839 #5, and http://orbiter-forum.com/showthread.php?t=26405 #3) and reviewed Tex's and David Courtney's videos. With two TransX windows open and Inherit Velocity disallowed, if I try to alter velocity for a sling I get a CTD with the Orbiter log saying (TransX version 3.14.0.3):

TransX: SelectDefaultPen(1): Pen got nuked, fixing.
TransX: SelectDefaultPen(2): Pen got nuked, fixing.

So from the above conditions (after probe launch), I create a new TransX plan with Autoplan off, Advanced on, Plan Initial. In the second screen, I set up the maneuver with a T maneuver about 0.0050 delayed from the current MJD but when I switch to Target I get the correct delta-V but a T maneuver of -381.5k seconds!! I've tried to work the problem but I'm stumped. It would seem I just need to take some energy out of the orbit either with retrograde thrust or (-) outward velocity and fine tune it with a bit of plane change to get a closer Jovian approach. I'd like to use TransX as a navaid but I may be reduced to using Orbit MFD and guessing. Any help greatly appreciated.

You are overcomplicating the problem. You are moving way too fast and Europa is not massive enough to affect your trajectory (relative to Jupiter) in any way. So a sling is not the correct choice of plan here, unless it is combined with a massive burn to lower the perijove. Even then, a maneuver would be much more helpful and easier to setup than a sling.

Nonetheless, such a maneuver did not happen in the movie. IIRC, the Leonov's trip was Earth→Jupiter with a close encounter with Europa on the way in. Then aerobrake at Jupiter and a direct (?) encounter with the Discovery which was in orbit around Jupiter (or was it Io? I don't recall).

So that's what you need to set up. Start by getting an encounter with Jupiter with the characteristics you want. (PeA, Inc and PeMJD). Once you have that, target Europa and look at its position around Jupiter as you are passing from Europa's orbital altitude.
Unless you are extremely lucky, one of these two things is going to happen:
Europa will be "ahead" of you, in which case you need to arrive at Jupiter slightly faster, or "behind" you, in which case you need to slightly delay your arrival at Jupiter.
In order to do either of those things, you need to go to the stage with the Sun as the MAJ body and Jupiter as the TGT and adjust the Prograde and Outward variables. On the other side MFD, keep an eye on the encounter with Jupiter and the closest approach to Europa.
After a little back and forth between those variables (and probably a slight adjustment of the Pl.Change), you should be able to get an encounter with Jupiter that passes very close to Europa on the way in.

I'm downloading the required addons now, I'll try to make a step by step guide for the initial setup and post it later.

Here is how I'd set up the flight:

First, since we have a specific date of departure and arrival, it's good to use IMFD's Target Intercept program as a timesaving tool. This will give us a clear view of where Jupiter will be upon arrival and also the shape of the transfer trajectory. It takes a lot less fiddling with TransX's variables to match the trajectory. As a first approach, we just need to get the Cl.Approach in the 100M vicinity and the Enc.MJD exactly when we want it.

With the initial approach done, let's have a look at the Jupiter encounter.

We are hitting Jupiter and the inclination is all wrong. Time to setup the correct periapsis altitude and inclination.

That seems about right. The Pe Altitude will oscilate a liitle bit, but that's expected. Time to see what Europa's position will be at arrival. By pressing the ++ button just once, we get to exploit one of TransX's "glitches". We can see the Jupiter encounter data (at the lower part of the right MFD) and the Cl. Approach to Europa at the same time!

The yellow perforated line that touches the green trajectory, shows where the ship will be when it crosses Europa's orbital altitude. The other yellow perforated line shows where Europa will be at the time. Obviously Europa is going to be "behind" us, so we need to delay the arrival just a little bit, giving time to Europa to move farther a long its orbit. In order to delay the trajectory we must take out a little bit of Prograde and add some Inward = negative Outward. We also want to keep the Jupiter Pe Alt at the 700k-800k range.

Seems to be working perfectly, the Cl.Approach to Europa has gotten much smaller. Let's keep at it until we get a very close flyby.

That's as close as it's going to get by using only Prograde and Inward. Now we need a little bit of Pl.Change, to get the line of nodes closer to Europa. This will mess up our Jupiter encounter inclination, but it's the only way to get even closer to Europa.

All done. We are passing ~ 1 radius from Europa and on the way to a perijove altitude of ~750 km. It's going to be very easy to send the probe to Europa with very small adjustments to the trajectory.

Now let's move the plan forward and target the Discovery. Also set up a maneuver exactly at the perijove, to see what kind of dV we need to lose during the aerobrake.

We need to lose ~15.93 km/s and Discovery won't be at the apoapsis. Oh well, that's not going to be difficult to remedy. Any additional maneuver we make at the apoapsis after the aerobrake, won't cost "extra", because it will also reduce the encounter velocity with the Discovery. The total dV from the aerobrake to the Discovery rendezvous should be roughly constant (give or take a few m/s).

Time to setup our Earth escape on stage 1.

The starting point was provided by the OP. We are slightly off-plane from the escape trajectory. A small adjustment with linear RCS should fix that.

We can fly the plan in the scenario above, but if we want to take things a step further, we can use the second instance of TransX [TransX(2)] and setup the TJI burn as a maneuver.
First we need to copy the plan (Stage 1 Escape (FWD)→2 Target Jupiter (FWD)→3 Target Europa (FWD)→ 4 Escape (FWD)→ 5 Target (ADJ) Ships (++) [type: Discovery].
On the first stage we need to setup a maneuver and press VW to get the crosshair view. We start by matching the "Begin burn" with the value from the first TransX instance and then the Prograde velocity.

Once that's done, we open TransX(2) on both sides, adjusting the variables on Stage 1 and looking at the Jupiter encounter on Stage 3 with Europa targeted. After a couple of minutes of adjusting the burn variables:

And here is the scenario, ~2 mins before the TJI burn, setup as a maneuver on TransX(2).
If we don't want to lose either of the plans on both TransX instances, we need to save with one MFD showing the first instance of TransX and the other showing the second one (TransX(2)).

Boy does that ever help! Just got home from the office but I'll get on this now. The movie has the Leonov do a flyby of Europa close enough to deploy the probe and pilot it over the surface. Our probe doesn't have enough delta V to make Europan orbit so for our add-on it's just a close approach. Also in the movie, the Discovery is caught in a deteriorating orbit between Jupiter and Io (something to do with an electromagnetic flux between Jupiter and Io or some such sci-fi magic). We found that if the Discovery started off in that orbit at the beginning of the planned Leonov-Jupiter mission, the orbit was unstable and the ship ended up in a retrograde orbit of Jupiter by the time the Leonov arrives. We ended up placing the Discovery at the L4 Lagrange point for stability.

Actually, Discovery started out at one of the Lagrange Points of Jupiter and IO (that's where TMA-2 is). Exactly which one is not mentioned, however the L1 point would be affected by the magnetic flux tube between IO and Jupiter caused by all the sulfur that IO is shooting into its orbit and ionized by the radiation belts of Jupiter. Discovery's orbit was degraded into a lower orbit around IO that would run into the surface of IO within a few days/weeks after the arrival of The Leonov. Anyway, there was no sci-fi magic involved. It's all documented science. That also explains why Discovery is yellow....

The problem we ran into is that Orbiter doesn't model the ion flux that degraded the orbit and discolors Discovery. We also looked at the other Lagrange points but L4 was most stable over the duration of the Leonov mission. :tiphat:
