There is a new biggest rock meteorite found in Germany, a 30.26 kg massive H4-5 chondrite found in Blaubeuren, 17 km west of Ulm. The owner stumbled over it already in 1989 in his garden and noticed its high iron content. But left it there until the beginning of 2020, when he thought twice against dumping the rock and send a fragment of it to Dieter Heinlein, the meteorite expert of the German aerospace center. There the typical internal structure of a chondrite was discovered and after they managed to cut a small fragment from the main rock at a local mason (since the meteorite was too big for the tools at the DLR) it was only a matter of a few weeks until the full meteorite was officially recognized as meteorite.

The chemical composition of the surface and the existence of further fragments of the meteorite confirmed that it had spend multiple centuries in the local soil, it might have come to Earth possibily around 1000. But the results of that analysis are still not available.

The meteorite remains at the owner now, who has already declared that this piece of local Schwobian history belongs into a museum. Though it seems like even the nearby Ulm lacks a history museum for such an exhibit.

I have been quite often to Blaubeuren in the past years for my business, really a nice place.

Would have thought heavy metal would be most meteorites music choice?
