So: This is the Scenario - it's more an easy challenge - but i's fascinating wat a normal Spaceshutle can do. You launch the Atlantis from Mars-Northpole - your objective is to dock it to ISS and than land it at Cae Canaveral.

This is your scenario:
Code:

Wait, the Space Shuttle on a transfer from Mars to Earth? Is that even possible?

yes - and look at fuel:
PRPLEVEL 0:1.000000 1:0.890000 2:0.700000
and its still possible - the reason why a marsmission is difficult is that you have to fly there AND back - the way there (earthlaunch...) is not only harder - cause the exponentality of the ziolkovski-equalation it doesn't mean that there will be around 2,6 times as much fuel needed, but that the qutient of fullmass/emptymass has to be potentiated by 2,6 - so a mission from mars to ISS and than to ksc is possible - the problem for a marsmission would be: how to bring a fullfueled Space-Shuttle to mars ( but it is still a little bit trickie... tip: none (would be spoiler))

well, mars is kinda small, so reaching escape velocity should be easy, but re-inserting into earth orbit will probably require a large braking burn before perapis, and then an aerocapture, finishing with an ApA a little below the ISS, rather than going straight to re-entry. the interesting part will be seeing if it has enough lift to hold itself in the atmosphere after getting to earth (hence the braking burn, for what little its worth)

and the real shuttle wouldnt be able to do this (even if it was running) because the TPS tiles would certainly vaporise if you tried an aerocapture from mars

now heres the interesting bit: the SRBs will get you to martian orbit (and probably a little bit of a high one), then the SSMEs will circularise and perform the ejection. then its touch and go whether there'll be anything left in the main tank, if there is, you can do a bit of pre-interface braking (butn roughly 130 on the orbital heading tape and find the sweet spot where the PeA doesnt change, making sure to keep it in aerocapture range

once youve aerobraked (very seat-of-your-pants flying) its just a case of aligning with the ISS (some plane changes during aerobrake are best to help this) and dock as normal

worth a shot id say!

yeah - thats true... but that isn't the matter - the solution may not be realistic - it may also be unrealistic as long as you don't really cheat (like warp-mfd or scenario editor :p) In fact: how to survive 7 months in a spaceshuttle?...

Cool!

Wow, sounds cool! I would definitive try this, if it wasn't for the fact that I don't understand a gram of these interplanetary MFD's!:idk::shrug:

although its interplanetary - I guess the ahrdest part is the aerobrake... the interplanetary is just to eject from mars with more than ejection speed and than use AP for correction... I think te simple usage of AP of IMFD for planar intercept should be easy to learn with a tutorial...

I now correctred a mistake wich lead to CTD...

so: you have to eject with 6300m/s, in a certain direction: use orbitMFD reference, sun, HUD, take the retrograde direction remember it, switch to surface, now add 10 degrees pitch - that's the direction to eject in with 6300m/s - after you totally left mars behind do corrections with IMFD... when reaching earth: watch that ou go in so that you orbit easwars... ydo aerobrake and stear to do plane align with ISS, sam time watch that apoapsis is at ISS orbit, when reaching apoapsis make orbits be the same than synchronise (easy)... from than on its like a normal ISS-mission - dock and land like normally... (just ISS has an higher orbnbit)

---------- Post added at 20:24 ---------- Previous post was at 20:16 ----------

you will have to do atmobreak with exernal tank on

---------- Post added at 20:26 ---------- Previous post was at 20:24 ----------

you also can't completely synchronyse with iss - you have to dock with some speed (unrealistic, but its orbiter) - you won't synchronyse, but you flyby and correct tha way that you slam into the docking port...

fuel states a bit pdated making it easier...
