Its not to the moon. Its just a crewed spaceflight.

Minister of State in the Prime Minister's Office Prithviraj Chavan on Wednesday informed the Lok Sabha that India will send the first man to space in the next eight years, if all goes well.

2020s is a more realistic timeline for a moon mission. We need someone to stand up and say "We choose to the moon before 2021 and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard" or may be

"I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before the next decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth."

Or maybe it should have some clause about establishing a permanent presence there and also outward expansion.

I can view it possible only if a sentence along the lines of vowing that "we shall not see it governed by a hostile flag of conquest, but by a banner of freedom and peace" is added to the proclamation.

That report seems to messed up seriously. Not only the headline is false, also the image to the right shows Enceladus, not our moon.

Yeah, that article sucks. The headlines completely contradicts the story.

"Manned mission to Moon in 8 years: Govt"

...Government has not yet sanctioned the mission. But, plans are being made to send a man to space. That does not necessarily mean sending a man to moon".

Good for India, though, if they can get humans into space by 2016. The number of nations capable of launching manned missions would have doubled in 13 years (Shenzhou '03) if they can pull it off.

Afghanistan? WTF!?!
"We choose to go the moon not because it is easy, but to distract the people from the social and economic issues that are too difficult or controversial to deal with here on Earth."

The following picture appeared in a SpaceNews magazine's issue on Feb 2, 2009:

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has released design illustrations of the capsule and rocket it plans to develop for the nation’s first independent manned orbital spaceflight, currently scheduled for 2015. The capsule is designed to accommodate three people, but the initial spaceflight will carry a two-astronaut crew. The rocket will be a variant of ISRO’s planned Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle Mark 2, featuring safety and reliability enhancements for crew-launching missions.

That would be funnier if a forum member here hadn't tried to do just that only a few short months ago.

Well, actually, the apex cone angle of the capsule of their spacecraft is 14.5°, while a Soyuz has 7° and an Apollo had about 30°, so it's neither's child. Must be adopted. :hmm:

Then again, 14.5° is in between 7° and 30°. ;)

Hopefully, I will get to be on something like that .. lol :)

You're lucky to have at least a promise of a manned program, here in SA we have nothing.
Hopes and dreams...

P.S: Better lock that stuff up. Some South Africans might come along and steal it. ;)
