This thread is for portuguese and non-portuguese speakers to talk just about anything, from Orbiter, an interesting movie and, of course, the portuguese language.
English is not prohibited, but portuguese is preferred so anyone can start learning this relatively popular language and practice it . Even spanish can be used .

Esse tópico é para aqueles que falam português, ou não, falarem sobre o que quiserem, desde Orbiter, filmes interessantes e, claro, a língua portuguesa.
Inglês não é proibido, mas português têm preferência para que todos possam começar a aprender essa língua relativamente popular e praticar-la . Até mesmo espanhol pode ser usado .


To get this thread moving, I'd like to ask about portuguese translation of space related terms.
Para começar esse tópico, eu gostaria de perguntar sobre a tradução em português de termos relacionados ao espaço.

Space = Espaco (I think)
Rocket = Foguete

You have to find the special characters feature of you Operating System (I think it's in the Control Panel in Windows).

"Space" with the accentuation becomes "Espaço" (notice the small leg on C).

The american and canadian keyboards don't have accents contrary to some european ones. I'll make your job easier: Copy 'n' Paste!

Periapsis = Periápese (I'm not sure about this one)

Apoapsis = Apógeu

Retrograde = Retrógrado

Translation =Translação

Rotation = Rotação

Gyroscope = Giroscópio

These were easy because they come from Latin words .

Space Shuttle = Vaivém Espacial (Ônibus Espacial for Brazilian People)
This is an interesting translation, because literal translation from english becomes "Pena (de badminton) Espacial" and from from european portuguese becomes "Spacial Comes-Goes" and from Brazilian Portuguese "Spacial Bus" (in spite of the word for "bus" in portugal being "Autocarro").

Centrifugal Force = Força Centrífuga ("Força" in the physics sense is always "Force", but in the informal and/or rude sense is "Strength".)

Black Hole = Buraco Negro

Pulsar = Pulsar (borrowed word )

UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) = OVNI (Objecto Voador Não Indetificado)

I can't remember many space terms that don't come from Latin roots so we can notice major changes after translation.

Sorry, I forgot to type the accented letters so you could copy. Here they are:

Note: there's no Portuguese-European word with the accent "¨" (umlaut or two dots over the letter) but I guess the brazilian people use it.

Brazil won't, as for the next year, use '¨' anymore (we almost never used it anyway, and only with u, 'ü').

Eu estou também curioso em saber sobre o alcance do cinema brasileiro. Tenho certeza que Tropa de Elite é conhecida internacionalmente, e talvez até Cidade de Deus, mas existem outros?

Yes, in Portugal where Brazilian soap operas are almost the only soap operas on T.V. too.
The national soap operas are relatively recent in Portugal since about the 80's. That as caused munch reason to talk about television.
I still remember when a well known comic group in this country made a sketch about the soap operas that run in Portugal (they made two actually, but only one is about the Brazilian ones). I'm not going to reference these sketches anymore because it may sound offensive.

Sim, Portugal é onde as telenovelas Brasileiras são quase as únicas na T.V. também.
As telenovelas nacionais são relativamente recentes em Portugal desde cerca dos anos 80. Isso foi grande motivo/razão de conversa sobre a televisão.
Ainda me lembro quando um grupo de comédia muito conhecido neste país fez um Sketch sobre as telenovelas que rodam em Portugal (são dois na verdade, mas só um é sobre as Brasileiras). Não farei mais referência a esses Sketchs porque isso pode parecer ofensivo.

Excuse me if I start to bother with corrections, but you mean "Partícula Beta" the way you wrote may mean (depending on context) "Personal Beta [Tester]".
Usually we speak of "Radiação Beta" (Beta Radiation/Beams) but that's all right aswell.

Just remember that the adjective (beta) comes after the noun (partícula) .

We use the same word for both meanings and I must admit that that is horrible.

Moon = Lua (Just like the programming language )

Mercury = Mercúrio

Venus = Vénus

Earth = Terra

Mars = Marte

Jupiter = Júpiter (usually is written without the accent, but that's very informal)

Saturn = Saturno

Uranus = Urano

Neptune = Neptuno

Pluto = Plutão

USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) = URSS (União das Repúblicas Socialistas Soviéticas)

USA (United States of America) = EUA (Estados Unidos da America)

European Union = União Europeia

Snake = Cobra

Cobra = Cobra Venenosa (When specifically: Cobra-Capelo)

Serpent = Serpente
