OMP 2010 is growing at a rapid rate. During the first week of January 2011 we were flying deltagliders in circles around Wideawake. By the end of this month, we've progressed to simulated commercial suborbital flights around the world as well as operating sci fi ships on direct ascent to interplanetary destinations.

The number of active bases have grown as well - since any client-side base addon can be safely used without consequence to the server or other clients.

This has given rise to the concept of field-modifying certain configuration files in order to optimise multiplayer performance.

The first object of interest is [ame="http://www.orbithangar.com/searchid.php?ID=4246"]Overton Island[/ame], which as we know, contains a zillion trees and solar panels. Removing them removes what is a large framerate and memory hog - these things have literally, global consequences in multiplayer (lag inducing).

I have also renamed Overton's base ID to "Overton Spaceport" to allow easier identification on the onboard GPS (Map MFD).

Unzip the below package to your Orbiter Multiplayer directory.

DISCLAIMER:
ORL (Orbiter Racing League) uses OMP (Orbiter Multiplayer Project) as multiplayer framework. OMP is not a finished product and as such subject to many hidden and/or obvious bugs and shortcomings. Support for it is limited, as the used version of OMP

Above is the current OMP description on OH and our project website (some of it). I think it can be a little flashier as we have gone a long way from flying deltagliders in circles around a little island.

Proposed new description:

Introduction:

Welcome to Orbiter Multiplayer 2010, a revolutionary new spaceflight experience that arguably, should be a MUST-TRY for any prospecting Orbinaut. It's easy to setup and it's an open concept proving ground for you to both learn and show off your piloting skills, on any ship, anywhere and anytime. Newbies welcome! We have a little flight crew that are more than happy to teach you how to setup your network for Orbiter Multiplayer, and show you the way to the stars. Orbiting is easy, if you can see how other ships fly their ascent profiles. Heck, just follow along and let the flight leader call out ascent vectors, power settings, etc. Outer space is just ten minutes away.

The history of OMP:
Some say that Orbiter Multiplayer started from Orbiter Racing League, based on an aerial racetrack around Ascension Island. That's absolutely correct - we started from re-enacting Reno Air Races using Delta Gliders, but today, the regular pilots of Orbiter Multiplayer frequently host the following missions for anyone to fly with or observe:

- XR2 Aerobatics display & supermaneuverability flight school (think Su35s and F22 thrust vectoring, only bigger and better)
- Transglobal container freight delivery. 600 tons of cargo to any destination in the world within one hour, or your hamburger back. (sorry, no currency modelled yet, only pilots' food consumption in RL)
- Coordinated LEO operations (XR2 squadrons, capital ship ops, etc etc)
- Interplanetary races in real time (Firefly or Star Trek flavours, you pick)
- And much MUCH more.

What can you do here and now in OMP:
Since the sky is now, not the limit, the functionality of OMP is limited only by human imagination. Monitor other players on external MFDs and optimise their flight profiles as you play Mission Control, or hop on for a ride on your friend's ship as it mimics the real world X-31 EFM on a supermaneuverability demonstration flight.

Orbiter Multiplayer is presently an Alpha build, but don't diss it - use it. It's just like regular Orbiter, you're not forced to participate in any missions or flight plans that aren't yours. Just fly and chat with other Orbinauts - with regular pilots leading radio conversations and supplying flight telemetry for missions in progress, you'll definitely start to feel like an ASTROnaut :)

Addon Requirements:
While the minimum requirements for OMP are simply, a clean 2010P1 Orbiter install and the OMP package, to witness most of the awesome tactical nuclear penguin mayhem flying around all over the place, you might want to have these installed:

... otherwise you're stuck with a Deltaglider or Shuttle at the Kennedy Space Centre. You'll want to experiene more than that, don't you?

1. Orbitersound (latest version) - There might be no sound in space.... other than your arsenal of computers, electronics and that almighty roar from your nuclear rocket engines (if you have them. Conventional rockets are mighty fun too. Big ones especially)

2. XR2 Ravenstar and XR5 Vanguard - as multi-role space and atmospheric ships, there is no better vehicle to teach you the basics of Orbiter with. Start with subsonic basic flight maneuvers, progress past the sound barrier to Mach 21 in the upper atmosphere, and successful zero G flight is just a stone throw away.

3. Wideawake International - As this famous video here shows, it's the perfect (arguably) educational flight demonstration venue. Plenty of cheap ship berths to rent, lots of action but watch out! Don't stand under that XR5 coming in for vertical landing.

4. Then, slap the Orbiter Multiplayer (latest package from Face dated 27 January 2011) on after these core addons are in place.

- OPTIONAL Addons -
For a more varied exo-atmospheric flight experience, we recommend the following addons:

1. Overton Island (with optimised CFG file for better framerate). An awesome base for you redneck blockade runner pilots (you know who you are). A Firefly class freighter can hide in an extinct volcano!

2. Firefly (Jumo Transport 2008 Edition) - With contragravity drives, variable vector engines and a fusion main drive to blast you across the sky, you'll be sure to get past any orbital defense force as though they existed only on pen and paper. You'd be halfway to the Moon by the time they detect you.

3. USS Hood (Excelsior class) - For longer excursions to the outer planets, conventional speeds will mean many people will be staring at their computer screens for months, if not years on end. Therefore, it's of practical utility to provide a faster means to get there.

There is a little problem with Orbiter Multiplayer: if one of the players doesn't have a ship someone else is using, it won't display, and with bases the same. Could we have an add-on package that contains everything needed for OMP, which should be unzipped over a fresh install? Just an idea...

Also, I couldn't get it to connect, but I think that's just my fault.

Shorter description to fit on OH - Delta please use your discretion to post some sections on our project site instead, if it's still too long. MS Word counts it as about 2600 characters.
