Not out of nowhere, if you read this summary of the situation.

But yes, it was one of the conflicts brewing silently for years, before escalating quickly.

Ethiopia's Tigray crisis: PM claims capture of regional capital Mekelle - BBC News

In a statement on Twitter, Mr Abiy said the army was in full control and that this "marks the completion of the [military's] last phase".
"I am pleased to share that we have completed and ceased the military operations in the Tigray region," he said.

So, its all finished then?

The leader of the TPLF told Reuters it would continue to "defend our right to self-determination" and "fight these invaders to the last".

Maybe not.

"defend our right to self-determination" - yeah, do we need another independent country like Eritrea, having a regime from which people are escaping?

Thats what it means in this case... self-determination of se people, not of humans.

Eritrea is a bad example though, because the separation from Ethiopia was really a good decision at that time. It just ended bad quickly, because Eritrea lacked a strong ally to protect it from outside influences. The African Union was never strong enough or interested enough to ensure a proper development of a working civilization.
