This was released on Steam Early Access a couple weeks ago, and I've just now gotten around to playing it. Loving what I see so far, so I figured I'd start a thread for it.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/383120/

Trailer:

The game is still pre-alpha, and it's already closer to the game I wanted Space Engineers to be when I bought it than SE is now.

Planets. Flora and fauna. Enemy NPCs.

Sure, you've got the same fiddly block-based construction as SE, but now when you finish building something, you can actually do something with it other than just ramming it into things.

I have really, really high hopes for this one. I've been disappointed in the past by sandbox games going nowhere or getting mired in useless "features" (I'm looking at you, SE), but this seems like it has possibilities.

Anyone else played it? What do you think?

Yeah first saw it in a Scott Manley video and thought it looked interesting.
I hope they keep development going.

I'm also not a fan of SE, just too dull.

Also a lot of other improvements on the visual side it seems. Omicron looks a lot better now than the last time I played it.

And yet the one change I really want--to allow you to control the ships with the mouse as if they were ships rather than people in an FPS--isn't there...

Sigh. In what universe do these people think that having to pick up your mouse and move it to the other side of the mousepad a dozen times just to turn around an acceptable gaming experience? Does everyone use trackballs?

I wonder whether the chainsaw will be also usable as a melee weapon. :hmm:

This game is seriously fun and it's very easy to get lost inside it after starting to explore.

I love it, too, but I've reached the point where I've built my uber capital ship on Omicron and have it fully stocked, but there's no real reason to continue jumping to other planets since there is nothing there that I need anymore. :( (I realize I could go visit other planets and attack all the alien bases, but without a quest / achievement / reason to do so, it just seems pointless to me.) I'm hoping the devs add some additional content / quests / achievements so there is something more to do once you have your uber capital ship built. Even just some quests like "Go capture 8 bases on Masperon" for some achievements would at least add some purpose to the endgame.

BTW starting on Omicron was a lot more fun for me than starting on Akua because it was more of a challenge to stay alive and build a proper base.

EDIT:
I see that Orb posted this from the new patch notes:

New non-persistent playfields with missions (reachable by portals like this):

Does that mean there are missions now??

Edit #2:
I see that those changes are just in the Alpha 6.0 experimental build yet -- I'll wait until the 6.0 non-experimental build to try it out. I don't trust experimental builds to not trash my save. :p The patch notes say:

Empyrion 6.0 experimental build said:
In contrast to earlier experimental releases where we released the first experimental version almost feature complete and quite stable, we decided to have a different approach this time: Given the fact that we integrated many new features, feature changes and game changers, we seek your feedback already at a very early state of the Alpha 6.0 development cycle. Thus, we released a very rough and literally “experimental” first version. Nearly all of the features are still Work-In-Progress! So please switch to the experimental branch only if you are willing to accept bugs, issues and unbalanced features.
