I was thinking in the fictional spacecraft they should put escape pods on the sides of them or drop ships that blend into the fictional spacecraft until needed. I just thought it might have been a good idea maybe being as in the movies and games and such they have escape pods and drop ships.Does anybody else agree with me kinda? :feedback:

Well, if a fictional vessel actually has an escape pod in whatever work of fiction it comes from, it might be a nice addition to an addon if anyone has time to make it.

But otherwise, in space it's better to jettison anything malfunctioning in a dangerous way and stay with the ship. Your "lifeboat" would probably be an inflatable "tent" that stays inside the ship, but can hold in air if there aren't any compartments on the ship that can still hold pressure.

Lifeboats are necessary on water-ships because ships tend to sink when damaged in certain ways. Spacecraft just keep on going, and the only things the passengers have to worry about are radiation, running out of air, food, or water, (which they will probably have less trouble with if they stay on board, especially the radiation issue), and explosions and other such mishaps (which can be more neatly dealt with by jettisoning the thing that's about to explode than by jettisoning everyone on board).

The obvious exception is if the disabled ship is on a course that will make rescue difficult, or is dangerous (collision or dangerous proximity with a planet or other object). In that case you'd want a skiff with enough delta v to get to a safer trajectory.

The problem with escape pods in Orbiter is that escape pods are designed for one-way, emergency ballistic reentry, and there are really only 3 bodies in Orbiter with atmospheres for you to land in. Mars' atmosphere is probably too thin, even.
