I'd like to start an open discussion on the recovery options of a DGIV crew during reentry when the DGIV has a serious problem...

For the definition of "serious problem", lets start with something like leaving the radiator or nose cone open; something that will eventually lead to vehicle breakup.

So, is it possible to make the crew survive if during the reentry the DGIV breaks up/disintegrates?

I doubt it. When you're in the middle of peak temperatures, try ejecting. You should get a message similar to it being too hot, and the ship will break up. Even if you could get the crew out after the ship breaks up, if I still remember my physics, they still inherit the velocity from the DG, which I think will mean they still will be heated to about 2200 C, which would almost instantly mean death.

I think this is why DanSteph made that re-entry checklist in the display menu.
