I just decided an hour or so ago to do the Apollo 8 mission, despite having never even made a serious attempt at AMSO before. Much like when I launched Atlantis a few months ago, I was mildly surprised when two hours later I was sitting in a scorched capsule south of Hawaii, having just travelled ~800 000 kilometers, to the Moon and back. Mission was completely successful. Final GET at splashdown: 122 hours, 6 minutes, 45 seconds. Pericynthion was 67 km.
Launch:
Before TMI:
Goodbye, S-IVB!
It's cold out here...
The destination:
It sure is big, and beautiful.
Leaving the SM. At least one of us is in for a fiery demise.
...Fortunately it wasn't me.
My slideshow would be longer, but I'm limited to 10 images.
Tools used were SurfaceMFD for launch and reentry, MapMFD for getting my splashdown position, and LunarTransferMFD for everything in between. Burns were done manually.
I knew for quite a while that I was capable of doing this, but it was a nice feeling to have finally done it.
Cheers, and happy orbiting.
