(CNN) -- A Boeing 767 on a flight from Newark, New Jersey, made a dramatic emergency landing at Warsaw, Poland's Frederic Chopin International airport Tuesday after problems with its landing gear, an airport spokeswoman said.

All the passengers on the flight, from Newark Liberty International Airport to Warsaw, are safe and uninjured, she told CNN. Newark Liberty serves the greater New York area.

The LOT Polish Airlines flight, which had been due to land at 1:35 local time, circled above the airport for an hour before coming down in a belly landing at 2:40, she said.

There were 230 people aboard the flight, Poland's TVN broadcaster said.
Video footage from the scene shows the plane coming in to land without its wheels down. Emergency vehicles can be seen racing towards the aircraft moments after it lands and appearing to hose it down as passengers disembark.

The airport is Poland's busiest, handling almost half its air passenger traffic with about 100 scheduled flights a day, the airport's website says.
LOT, the Polish flag carrier and one of the world's oldest airlines, is currently offering special deals on flights from the New York area to Warsaw.

In 2010, it carried more than 4.5 million passengers, nearly three-quarters of whom were on international flights, its website says. The airline said it aims to offer quality of service and value for money.

That looked like a really smooth, easy belly landing. Impressive how he came in almost level with very low vertical speed. No spinning, no tail slamming, just an easy slide to a halt.

There is no yet known cause of the undercarriage failure. BTW, it's 767-300.

there is no such thing as a soft landing...just one where the plane isnt turned into a metal pancake

Don't see that every day... Glad everyone's OK. Question is, how long will the repairs take?

Such a landing even can be softer than on wheels. We had a similar case in Germany in 2009. Accidentally there was a German top politician onboard the aircraft (it was a Fokker 100 and the landing gear did not extract). Still at the airport after the landing, he said to the reporters that the landing was "incredibly soft".

I never realised how (relatively) easy it is to land without wheels...

It's actually not a big deal but just looks awesome. You don't have directional control via the nosewheel of course, no wheel brakes and not reverse thrust available. But the approach isn't much different from a normal approach. As a passenger I wouldn't be worried at all. Those landings, without a part or the entire landing gear available, turn out to be unproblematic and soft in most cases...

i'd expect the ground effect to be a lot more relevant when landing without gears... the reduced clearance should make for a good "padding" in order to smooth things up

similarly, back when i flew sailplanes, the thing didn't even have a brake - instead, it had one single center wheel and a skid under the nose (a common setup)...

indeed, this kind of config is intended to land on grass or dirt - but we did it on concrete and it wasn't ever harsh or anything too uncomfortable... a bit loud, it was - and it only hurt our bottoms when we had to veer it off the side to clear the runway over the bumpy grass, there was no suspension on that wheel :p

of course, once i did it on the G42.... wasn't really my intention, i just kinda erhmm... :shifty: "misremembered" about the gears and their need for, uhh... lowering :uhh:

it stopped alright.... but the heatshield wasn't pleased when it did

top marks to the pilot, its not an easy thing to do by any measure, whats more impressive is that he managed to land so softly that there wasnt even any sign of fire or structural damage to the craft!

give that man/woman a medal

Yes, very nicely done...it will be interesting to find out how multiple redundant systems failed. The final extension method is freefall, gravity...wonder how that one failed?

If you can't unlock the landing gear, there could be a lack of alternatives. AFAIR, this is only hydraulic or mechanic, and could be damaged centrally.
