Default Long March 2C launch with Yaogan-23, November 14/15, 2014
by Galactic Penguin SST 12-09-2014, 07:06 PM

Note from editor: Well...I was quite busy last month and up till now, so I have left out all 3 Chinese satellite launches in November till now. I apologize if this confuses you guys.

So the last quarter of the year is always filled with mystic Chinese satellites heading to space as they replenishes and expands their spying toys in space, and November is no exception to this order. All 3 launches that happened were all military related (although not quite in the way you would think for the last one! More on that later....), and this one is the 1st.

On November 14 at 18:53 UTC, in the dead hours of night time in China, there was some loud noise and streaks of light originating from the mountains of northern China. This was caused by the launch of a Long March 2C rocket out of LC-9 at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center, which 11 minutes later deployed the 23rd mission of China's Yaogan (Mandarin for remote-sensing, a pretty neutral word for reconnaissance ) satellite series into a 500 km high polar orbit.

The orbit again confirms the identity of the satellite rather easily - the 4th (and apparently the last) member of a series of light radar satellites that provides the main all-time eyes for the Chinese military. The orbit indicates that YG-23 is a replacement for YG-13 launched just under 3 years ago; the same series also includes YG-6 (launched April 2009) and YG-18 (launched last October).

The stream of Chinese spysat launches continues with yet another one launching just 5 days later. But that story is for another thread....
