Arrow Base Surface Tile Tutorial
by OrbitHangar 03-21-2011, 07:40 PM

Author: spacethingy

A lot of comments have been made on the Orbiter Forum that a Surface Tile tutorial is needed.

I decided  to have a go at fulfilling this need.

Hope it's clear enough!

You really need Google Earth and the Surface Tile Calculator for this (links provided).

Please give some feedback if you can, even just a rating would be great.

Yeah, clouds are my biggest moan about Google Earth, that's why I stick to islands...

The reason I used it was it allows lat/long input very easily.

Thanks for the comments!

Try some from the list at the page which URL is below, having a link to "Satellite" in "Global services":
http://toolserver.org/~geohack/geoha..._N_0_0_0.000_W

You can change `params` in the URL to your coordinates, i.e. "params=0_0_0.000_N_0_0_0.000_W" in the above url are for 0 degrees, 0 minutes, 0.000 seconds North, 0 degrees, 0 minutes, 0.000 seconds West.

Alternatively, you can check older images in Google Earth, which may have no clouds for that region.

Look for a clock icon in the top of the screen. Then select a date.

I'm getting an error when trying to open the archive, downloaded correctly, using 7zip. Error translation would go something like
Quote:
Cannot open 'surfacetiles.zip' as archive
Am I the only one getting this?

This isn't a ZIP archive, but non archived PDF document named "Surface Tiles.pdf". Did you rename it, when you were asked where to download it?

Opera has failed me!
Just opened it (auto downloaded to browser's temp folder, and opened), weird that it shows as zip for me. Renaming the extension to .pdf works. I'll take a look inside the browser's settings....
Thanks!

Default Question

I have a question about wrong tile proportions in Orb. I have an image for tile, and it is power of 2 side size, it is ideal square. But I see that Surface Tile Calculator shows diferent values for height and for width for this tile, and I now that is normal, and in orbiter my ideal square tile transform into rectangle and I now that is normal too. Because in Google Earth it's not ideal square too. But why when i compare how my scene looks in GE and in Orb i see that it has wrong proportions (compressed on width like) How about that? HOW TO AVOID THIS?
Help me please because I want to continue my work, but this problem does not allow me to begin place objects on my tiles.

You may use awesome SASPlanet tool to work with google earth images and many others. It has access to google earth cache. You may glue any amount of tiles into one image by two click. And it is extremely comfortable tool.
