Default MOL / Gemini B WIP
by 4throck 11-06-2017, 12:31 PM

MOL / Gemini B (WIP test version)

Contributors, co-authors and people that helped:
Barry, Gattis, Usonian, Sputnik and the original Gemini capsule mesh creators.
(if I missed someone, just say so)

This is a generic MOL + Gemini B mission simulation.

It mixes custom .dll, multistage2015 and spacecraft4 vessels and runs on Orbiter 2016.

The MOL based on the real hardware built, so it's a single mission station, with no resupply follow up missions planned.
You just go up on the Gemini B, attached to MOL, and then come back down on the Gemini B.

GENERAL USAGE:

::Setup::
Activate the required modules in Orbiter: ScriptMFD, Multistage2015.
Edit config\MFD\ScriptMFD.cfg and add at the end MFD\GeminiB.cfg

::Operation::
  • The Titan IIIM launcher is implemented using Multistage2015.
  • When in orbit, selecting MOL you can create or make the AMU guy disappear using 1 (open hatch) and E (EVA).
  • G and K operate the payload door and mirror.
  • Selecting Gemini B you can detach and reattach using the normal spacecraft.dll attachment commands.
  • The attachment point (visible on the lower left of the screen) is attach:equip-mol
  • You can then use GeminiB MFD to reenter. Orient retrograde and press the "REE" button.
  • It should be an automated process until splashdown. Stay in cockpit view for Gemini MFD to work and open parachutes, landing bag, etc.

KNOWN PROBLEMS:

  • MOL RCS not working with Gemini attached.
  • States are not saved. The MFD will try to detect your mission phase, but if you save in the middle of chute deployment, reloading the scenario will certainly be problematic.
  • Spacecraft4 limitations in Orbiter2016
  • Script MFD only works on the internal view, so trying to see the chute open on the external view will not work
  • Script MFD needs high MFD refresh to work OK (set MFD refresh to 0.10)
Changes:
Gemini MFD now changes the capsule reentry parameters to make it (somewhat) compatible with Orbiter 2016. So you should splashdown with the right attitude and don't sink.

Ok, loaded it up and started the launch scenario. First constructive criticism right off the bat: I recommend that you get rid of the pre-launch cryo effects. Except for the Centaur upper stage, Titan IIs and later used exclusively storable propellants.

Missing mesh I think. Get CTD after launching the orbit scenario

Also, I'm not seeing a new MFD.

Thanks for testing.

Will track those missing files down and update.

Yes the venting doesn't belong there.
The Titan III had a very clean launch:

The Titan's with Centaur upper stages would have had a little bit of venting around the top since Centaur uses cryogenic fuels. But not on the MOL launcher.

Just a small update:
Titan venting fixed, missing textures tracked down.

Hard to figure out what meshes are missing, the log is not specific.
The add-on started using the normal Gemini meshes, so I guess it's still trying to load those.
Trial and error will solve it!

Where d/l?

Your zip on dropbox still says version 20171106. Do you plan to update?

Updated file link on the first post!

Changes:
- Meshes have been renamed and sorted out (I hope )
- No venting, launch trajectory has been reviewed.
- The MOL has some issues (no RCS while attached to Gemini, no EVA) that will be sorted out.

For now please test and see if it gets into orbit with no crashes.
Once that's solved, we'll sort out the rest!

Had no problem with the launch mission, no ctd. But had a ctd with the Orbit scenario, missing texture and the old out dated API warnings going on.

Thumbs up

Tested launch scenario in Orbiter2016 and it went fine. Ended up in a (roughly) 200km x 300km orbit with 1:01 burn time left in stage 3 when the AP shut down.

Nice work, and very nice looking models.

Thanks for the feedback.

An updated version with splashdown is 98% finished, but still needs some ironing out.

It's a bit of an hack (you need to be on the cockpit for some things to work) but should work and allow you to splashdown in Orbiter 2016

New version (see first post).

On my tests the splashdown is a bit random.

I get good results with the D3D9 graphic client + high res earth textures.
For some reason it doesn't seem to work that well with inline graphics and stock low res earth.

Anyway, try it with MFD refresh set to 0.10 and do reentry on cockpit view.
That should make the MFD perform well. The expected result it the capsule floating on the water, with the doors ejected and landing bag open.

Hi,
I don't know if it is interesting for you, but there is an article about MOL in the latest BIS "Spaceflight" magazine
https://www.bis-space.com/eshop/prod...february-2018/
(if you want to PM me your contact address, I can mail you the article)
Cheers,
Brian

Tried the new version, thanks for all the work you are putting into it too! Launch mission worked fine, the orbit scenario was great, saw the hatch open on the MOL itself, the reentry was ok, but once landed the hatches were not open, no floatation collar was there, capsule just sitting in the water. And yes I did view the landing from inside the capsule. Had to manually open the chute as it came down, was falling pretty fast, lol All in all, this is getting better by each version!
