Default Fix for OrbiterSound ATC & MP3 using graphics clients

As fate would have it, I noticed that problem last night while flying from Deimos back to Mars. After messing with it I figured out the problem (note that the root issue affects all graphics clients, not just the D3D9 client): OrbiterSound is using a relative path to locate the $ORBITER_ROOT\Sound directory (".\Sound"). The Orbiter_ng executable is located in $ORBITER_ROOT\Modules\Server rather than the normal $ORBITER_ROOT, and so when running a graphics client OrbiterSound looks under $ORBITER_ROOT\Modules\Server\Sound instead of $ORBITER_ROOT\Sound. When I tried mirroring the Sound directory to $ORBITER_ROOT\Modules\Server\Sound, ATC worked fine.

Barring a fix in a new OrbiterSound version, the simplest and most efficient workaround if you have Vista or Windows 7 is to create a symbolic link to your Sound directory as follows:

1. Open an administrator Command Prompt and cd $ORBITER_ROOT\Modules\Server.
2. Execute: mklink /d Sound ..\..\Sound
Then run Orbiter_ng normally; your ATC should work now.

If you're still running XP you'll have to copy (duplicate) your Sound directory structure underneath Modules\Server (EDIT: see Orb's post below about using a free third-party tool to create a Junction in XP instead):

You can create a junction from it instead of copying it (Junction, or Link Shell Extension), or even symbolic links with 3rd party system driver.

This is the only client that gives me 60 FPS constantly. Vanilla Orbiter only gives me 8-15. Ogla around 30.

I have a brand new (almost) Nvidia GTX 465. This is the only playable client with my card.

I had stated previously that I wasn't noticing much of a difference in FPS on my laptop between inline D3D7 and the D3D9 client. This has been consistently the case with either stock vessels or scenarios with one or two moderate-poly-count vessels loaded and on-screen.

HOWEVER, last night I was testing my latest build of the EAS Cortez in both inline and D3D9, and while panning around the vessel in external view, the difference was HUGE.

The Explorer-class vessel mesh is massive in both size and poly count. With the default rendering engine, I was getting between 8 and 15 FPS while panning around the vessel. When using the D3D9 client, I was getting a SOLID 60 FPS no matter what was on the screen with the vessel (limited by my laptop's refresh rate - will test again on my desktop tonight to see how high it will actually go).

Just wanted to pass this info along and say thanks for all your hard work on this graphics client. If you can work out getting the DGIV and spacecraft3 vessels working, I will use this client exclusively for all my Orbiter sessions. Keep up the good work!

It would be great if sc3/ms2 worked in D3D9 though judging by the first post it is an issue with the modules themselves and not really with the client.

Wow, all about this client sounds nice.
Is there any way to do it on a netbook?
I have an Acer Aspire One, Windows XP. With inline client of Orbiter, I'm getting around 40fps, but when using D3D9, it crashes. Everytime.

A few things:
- Does the onboard video on your netbook support DX9? Check manufacturer specs for the model to see if video capabilities are listed
- Which version of DirectX are you you running? Start-Run, type dxdiag, click OK or hit Enter.
- Make sure you uncheck Use 4X multisampling in the Video settings on OrbiterNG (will need to do this each time you run it). I've seen 2 machines so far that don't support this and get an instant CTD if it isn't disabled.

2:DirectX 9.0c
3:I tried it, but it loads very long and then it crashes again.

EDIT:It loads now normal, but I see for 3 seconds only blue sky and there where would be that with time, date and that stuff is all white. Then it crashes again.

I can only tell you that your graphics card isn't fully D3D 9.0c compatible. Maybe it supports DirectX 9.0, 9.0a, or 9.0b (Shader Model 2.0), but not fully 9.0c (Shader Model 3.0).

Also try disabling local lights. If that works, there is a workaround in the Orbiter.cfg you may need to add.

**Edit** Wait, would the MaxLights setting be relevant in this client?
