Playing around a bit with IMS now that my machine is running again, designs both feature Hlynkacg's transhab. Mars vehicle loosely inspired by one of Ernst Stuhlinger's designs Fusion rocket "threading the needle" between Saturn and the innermost rings on a polar transfer orbit.

Hi All, sorry to be a flake-i-form person. As you might have guessed, I can't grok the new schedule owing prior travel commitments which will keep me out of the loop all next week. December missions are still looking fine.

    Request Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter

As another low-thrust pilot, I will tell you have a few options: IEATMFD has a feature which will "cheat" and lock your attitude as well as some other features that are nice for low thrust vessels, but this can get a little unstable/buggy with some vessels. AbsoulteKillrot I find to be a...

That schedule should be fine for me, though I may have an intractable travel commitment for the 16th and 17th. I should know by the 10th.

Everything still looking fine here. Will advise.

New Release Interplanetary Modular Spacecraft RC9

Since you're using IMFD, The "SOI" flag in IMFD's map program will show the gravitational sphere of influence for bodies, which is the changeover points for the hud/autopilots.

Indeed, I didn't want to leave you guys short a crew member and I should have a dip in personal responsibilities anyway once it's time for the B-Crew (B+ Crew?) to get underway. This stated I'm going to be pretty intermittant for the rest of the month. I'll keep pace with developments in this...

These are implemented as storage capacity, not generation capacity. Though in real life there is also regeneration capacity for water and air these have to be separate modules in IMS. ---------- Post added at 08:44 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:57 AM ---------- In any case, I've been...

All of the above. You'll notice also that there are no installed low-temperature radiators, antenna masts, additional cooling and the like since the idea is just to have a simple and extensible framework. As a happy accident, the cargo bay fits the vehicles in "world of 2001" very well, and in...

Yes, that is a hassle. Also I've been working on a modest cargo rocket similar to your specification. If you guys would like I can post it so people can practice/optimize low-thrust trajectories. I'm afraid it doesn't have the propellant loading for a fast transfer though.

Well, noble gas propellants are typically the shortlist for hall thrusters, but since it's a more viable propellant for a VASIMR than for a Hall thruster there is a reason hydrogen is typically proposed for a VASIMR mission and that's so you can refill at the destination. All of these moons have...

Looking at your post above it looks like you're suggesting putting the thing on a hohmann transfer, which I would imagine would be done in "high thrust low ISP" mode? For that mission profile Hall thrusters might be more effective than VASMIRs, not the least because the tankage volume and dry...

Not to be too political but the "Classical European Explorers" naming theme is pretty played out. Since that seems to be the consensus on the piloted vessel though maybe for one of the cargo ships we could go for someone who wasn't a westerner, like Zheng He? Also as far as european explorers...

One thing to note with a low-thrust transfer is that the crew will require the hab to be paired in a centrifuge since, unlike the mars DRM crew ship you have posted, this vehicle must spend most of the trip aligned with the velocity vector and cannot tumble to generate artificial gravity.

Those panels are going to be pretty ineffective out of LEO. The hab I posted earlier in this thread can attest to that ;) As for deep six: with Hlynkacg's kind permission I've started an IMS config file for his transhab, which should appropriate for our purposes. Once I get a free afternoon...

New Release Interplanetary Modular Spacecraft RC9

Well I ninja'd my own in the same time-scale and then edited it again so that my edited to add would actually have been edited to add. The laws of temporality are fluid with me tonight it seems. Maybe we should call Martin Heidegger :shifty: Anyway, this project started out as finding a...

New Release Interplanetary Modular Spacecraft RC9

At the risk of making this still more complicated I thought I'd add that I'm referencing the design in this paper. And this paper depicts a design with a similar issue. And edited to add that yes, as a new father your priorities are firmly anywhere but in front of a text editor. One baby is...

New Release Interplanetary Modular Spacecraft RC9

Yes sorry if there was any confusion. In the configs as they are now the generator does all the producing and the engine is a thermal type with a PowerInput line. And yes this definitely seems like a textbook case for composite modules. This is pretty much it, with the one big caveat about the...

New Release Interplanetary Modular Spacecraft RC9

So I have a question about some things not in the modder's guide thread, with regards to modelling a fusion rocket and its power turbines as separate modules. Since this concerns engines let me know if it should wait until after any changes in RC3 if they are not just to config files. Anyway...

Yes, it does allow for good mass ratio. But it cannot be understated in optimizing the vehicle configuration that there is a price of large inert mass with fusion systems. Excluding radiators all required engine systems add up to around 400 tons. Even still, the thrust-to-mass wins out over VASMIR.
