I had just realized today that Skylab 2, Skylab 3, and Skylab 4 have "Skylab I", "Skylab II", and "Skylab 3" in their insignia, respectively. Makes good sense because the numbering of the insignia tracks the human flights to Skylab (i.e. all but the launch, Skylab 1). Apparently the confusion...

[Tuesday] Release of OrbiterSound 5.0 for Orbiter 2016

Super work on this, Dan. Really do appreciate your free time spent on this. The web radio feature directly from the MFD is an excellent touch.

A better engine is what is needed to get to the moon and the planets in the system

In theory, yes. Trouble is, the time it would take to develop said "better engine" would necessarily entail trading away the sort of experience and know-how that's only attainable via piecemeal developmental steps in lieu of doing it all at once. To say nothing of the necessity of that very...

Launch News SpaceX DM-2 Launch Scheduled for May 27!

Fair points. Never mind the curmudgeonry of this incurable Mercury-Gemini-Apollo purist. Progress is progress. I'd expect the folks in the white room to have taken care to avoid such a mix-up -- though little surprises me anymore.

Launch News SpaceX DM-2 Launch Scheduled for May 27!

Great launch and an exciting development in space exploration. Though I'm dubious on the return of the NASA "worm" logo. Symbolizes the post-Apollo letdown to me.

Great -- thanks for sharing, 4throck. Has a very cool look to it; really does give it a more realistic feel. Between your texturing/bases work and the terrain of O2016, AMSO for me is more immersive than ever before - I've spent hours this weekend landing in scenic locations w/ Pursuit MFD and...

4throck -- cool set. A question, though a bit tardy (and unrelated to the terrain) -- where did you get the dark LM cockpit texture? It's much closer to the real thing, and I'd like to get my hands on it as well. Is it custom?

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas to all on this 50th anniversary of Apollo 8's historic flight to the Moon. Some time ago, I read that someone had written a letter to the crew of Apollo 8 thanking them for "saving 1968." An Apollo 8 would have been nice in 2018, but we'll have to make do with celebrating the...

I (sometimes) can, but very carefully. The Spider LM is top-heavy in Orbiter, so the slightest bit of lateral velocity will cause tipping, so I hover and use translational RCS to null that out. Cutting the hover engine at probe-length will cause tipping to, so thrust is necessary all the way...

NASSP Custom PDI Scenarios for NASSP

Right. A major plane change post-LOI is a pretty savage way of doing it, but I was coming at it from the perspective of adapting an existing pre-PDI scenario into one targeting another site (which I gather is not possible b/c it really messes with the Virtual AGC, after having experimented with...

NASSP Custom PDI Scenarios for NASSP

Thanks! I knew the AGC gave some leeway, but I was thinking more about reprogramming a landing site into the computer after a drastic plane change (so AGS/PGNS don't think I'm targeting the same site from a different plane and thus throwing the att. control for a loop). I have some free time...

NASSP Custom PDI Scenarios for NASSP

Hey, thanks for the reply (neat vid, by the way)! I suspected as much; there's quite a bit going on in the .scn files. I had a fleeting thought that it would be as simple as picking up post-DOI and punching some new coordinates into the DSKY before P63 or something, but if that were the case...

NASSP Custom PDI Scenarios for NASSP

I've been running ad-hoc PDI scenarios in Orbiter 2016 using the AAPO LM from Orbiter 2010 (that works with some bugs in 2016), but was curious about setting up custom PDI scenarios (targeting different landing sites) in NASSP for 2016, as the uploader of the video below did. How might I go...

Having fun exploring different sites on the moon with the 3D terrain and microtextures to boot. Pictured here, some alternate history: Apollo 17 at Gassendi Crater central peaks, December 1972. At one time, Gassendi was considered a final contender for Apollo 17, but was scrapped because of the...

I just can't get over the new 3D terrain. On my way to Brighton Beach, I had to snap this pic of Montes Apenninus and Hadley-Apennine, the landing site of Apollo 15, from the pilot seat. I used to time warp through my lunar landings, but I now enjoy the scenery on the way down.

News Eugene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon, died today.

Just saw this and had to stop by. I greatly enjoy listening to his recollections and insight. He had a gift for storytelling and speaking, perhaps unlike any other astronaut of his era. RIP.

    Orbiter 2016

Longtime Orbinaut, since the 2006 days. Checking in to say how beautiful Orbiter 2016 is. I'd never used the beta, so I'm blown away by the updates. The terrain is incredible. Loads of fun with this are in my future. Thanks, Martin! :)
