Visual style.

I'm starting working on visual end of the page and have few questions.

I assume fluid layout with minimum resolution of 1280x720. That should get us within reach of most PCs and current tablets. I'd like it to look more modern because now page looks like mid '90s.

Few questions:

1.) do we need multiple skins?
2.) should I make placeholder for tweeter feed (if yes how wide)?
3.) do you think login part should be moved away from main menu to top right corner of the page?

Puts the Fun in Dysfunctional
I can't see imgur images, that site and I aren't friends.

The current OHM site has multiple skins, I'd say it's up to you more or less, though I'd like a light and dark option myself. Login on top right sounds better, as for Twitter, they embed a block but I don't recall how big it is. I'll find out.

Those images are not hosted on imgur. I'm using dan's server for that and on my droplet there is nothing you'd object to (except my guitar bits).

Sorry, I thought they were, since I can't see them. Odd.

Good to see things moving along. I like the banner.

If you are redoing the site, I'd suggest Bootstrap for the structure. That takes care of things like mobile menus, different resolutions, etc. And you get good human readable HTML!

Just choose one or two basic templates from here: http://startbootstrap.com/template-categories/all/
I'd suggest doing a complete page on the site, with full content.
Don't worry about graphic design for now. Just use the layout as it comes and place the content.
That will show what works and what doesn't.

Once you have the page structured, styling boxes, fonts, colors, etc, is easy.
I can help there if needed, since I do it professionally ;-)

While I played with bootstrap a bit, I found that working with someone else's code gives me headache.

My role ends at producing HTML/CSS layout for main, add-on and other misc pages for Xyon to hook up backend to. Code will be cleaned up and formatted to allow any modification.

More progress on monday/tuesday as I'll have 2 days off.

Bootstrap out of the box only has very basic styles so you can add all your classes the same as before. It's a fast choice to handle collapsing columns, mobile menus, etc, etc across multiple hardware.

Of course, custom code works just fine, but you will have to reinvent the wheel so it will take you much more time ;-)

Regarding Skins :
You can create the sort of skins which change the picture on the header.
the page you shared contains a picture of earth.
you can create a skin which shows some other planet etc.
(and maybe even the deltaglider)

Hello Loru and Xyon,

First of all very cool that you're working on enhancing the site! I want to throw in my two cents here as a designer. I think you should consider the new layout of OH as a practical webshop. Where the add-ons are products with dependabilities. First page should list the versions of orbiter you want an add-on for. After that make trees of each subject, like a button (realistic / near tech) > (a ISS button) on top for instance, list the two major "parents" > (thornton's and donamy's) and all their > (little updates and upgrades) by other contributors behind the first click in easy to understand boxes. Do this for every add-on or make it so the uploader itself can assign and add the required add-ons to make it work and they are on the same page in buttons. The biggest flaw right now is the confusing layout.

I agree with 4throck on using pre-defined lay-outs. Saves a lot of time and are still very much open to your own style and creativity. Keep up the good work!

Agreed that it's possible to adapt an online shop into a catalog, just by removing the price field and buy/checkout buttons. ;-)
