Adds? srsly?
I'm getting adds displayed on orbiter forum

So, since this morning, I'm getting lots of adds between forum posts and even on the index page. They even mess up the forum layout.

Now, I know that the staff certainly isn't directly responsible for that, as noone announced that OF would be posting adds, last time I checked the forum had trouble with too much money, and not too little, and the adds have a small-print disclaimer "adds not by this site".

I'm using chrome, and I haven't any plugins active that could be responsible for that. Still, maybe the staff can help me to get rid of them?

I can't reproduce the issue, but I'm using Firefox 29 and Opera 12.16 (the last x86_64 / Presto version), not even with disabled AdBlock+ and NoScript add-ons.

Can you reproduce it in another browser or post a screenshot how it looks like?

Puts the Fun in Dysfunctional

Also test it out in incognito mode, which runs no plugins or extensions by default and can catch hidden adware plugins.

Thanks for the suggestions. After not being able to reproduce the issue in firefox (which I hadn't used in a long time) and the issue also appearing in incognito mode, and considering HVid codec had "allow in incognito mode" on by default, I got to the source of the problem.

Make that "I really didn't think I had any plugins active that could be responsible for that".

The only active plugin I had was the HVid codec, which didn't make any trouble until this morning. However, on deactivating it, the adds are now gone again.

So a short warning to everyone who might be reading this, HVid codec version 6.0 contains malware!

Mostly Harmless

TL;DR version:

The adware components are bundled with open source software, e.g., VLC media player and Xvid codec.

The only thing I can recommend is AdBlock Plus, like orb kind of suggested. Once I had it stop working, but a re-installment fixed that right up. I hate ads.

Adblock Plus is (again) under investigation in Germany for their obscure business habits, because the project is managed by a German company since last year. They take money from companies for whitelisting their ads and had been caught doing active attacks against competing products. And it filters bad news about itself from websites.

I would look for alternatives there.

Like for example Adblock Edge, which is a fork from Adblock Plus without "acceptable ads" feature.
