I, for one, want to thank HarvesteR for "bridging" the path for Orbiter... with it's simplified, smaller and more "experimental" approach to learning spaceflight, I'm sure quite a few recent orbinauts started off blowing unsuspecting Kerbals into charred greenish splatters on a launchpad... :P...

Last time I checked, they do succeed in launching commercial payloads to space... The experimental phase is the first stage landing at this point. You guys really are in full black and white mode... :facepalm: When the discussions are much more informative and good humoured on the Facebook...

You know, people really, really should be taking a step back and look at the whole picture. SpaceX is testing their procedures, pushing the envellop, getting kinks out of the system... However you choose to call it, it still is an experimental phase of flight that almost noone dared to touched...

The video of yesterday's attempt would seem to prove the contrary. It remained relatively stable up until that leg slowly got loose and the rocket fell like a giant tree.

This is precisely why they test... if you never launch on an heavy fog day, how else will you know ice buildup could mechanically interfere with latching of a landing leg? Think Kerbal. Incremental bug elimination :-p

Well... if you can't have the shock absorption on the rocket, why can't you have it on the barge itself? An adjustable platform, with hydraulic actuators, to keep a landing platform level and absorb a landing, while the barge can move a little more freely with the swells underneath it.

Well, I know some people are going to spin this negatively for SpaceX, but objectively, they are trashing first stages in the ocean anyway, so might as well give it a try despite the marginal conditions. Let's not forget this was a NASA payload too, so there's a PR issue here as well not to...

The sat would have been to the south of the barge, in the direction of the incoming returning first stage ... it probably interfered with the sat link in the final few seconds, so we didn't get to see the "chemokinetic exothermal event" that took place just after LOS... Ah darn. I was...
