Hy there,

inspired by discussion in WHAP's AIA Toehold lunar base thread, I've started the UMMUFB project here. It intends to simulate direct vessel->base UMMU transfer instead of having to EVA to the base's airlock.
The system consists of:

  • a plugin module "UMMUFB" to be activated in Orbiter's modul tab
  • an MFD mode "PAX" available from the above mentioned plugin
  • a ScnEditor compatible vessel module "UMmuBase"
The "base" vessel can be created anywhere and will receive the transfered UMMUs. The vessel has some basic UMMU function copied from Dan's superb UMmuShuttlePB example implementation, so you can switch to the "base" and browse the passengers as well as transfer them back to linked vessels.

Vessels are linked to the "base" by means of the PAX MFD-mode. Whenever a vessel is landed near a pad of a base, the situation is displayed in the MFD and a press of the PAX-button will establish the link. From this point on, the vessel's UMMU implementation will think it is docked to the base vessel.

The current version can be downloaded from BitBucket. There is a wiki and bugtracker, too...

Excellent stuff Face!

I'm at work atm, so will have to check this in detail later, but on the surface it looks like a welcome and much needed addition to the addon family.

Great work on this to get it moving so quickly. Would you mind if I included the package in with my WIN update, and subsequently with the Lunar base too?

This is getting a bit like "Sims in space" but I love it and yes, this is needed so I can do moon personnel transfers.

Thanks face.

I'm not sure if it should be included in a bigger package yet, since it is really a "first". I think it is better to have it in use a bit before it can be bundled with high quality packages like WIN.

If you feel it to be ready enough for inclusion, I won't stop you, though...

cheers,
Face

You may want to explain what PAX is. :)

PAssenger eXchange. Or peace with your inner self, whatever you prefer...

As mentioned above, the PAX button will enable/disable the link to the base once landed.

You sell your skills short, mate. But regardless of that, I can see the benefits of including it, and indeed, not including it in the release. I'm just not a huge fan of addons that need addons that need addons that need addons. Multipackages make life easier. That said, it is easier to update stuff if it is on it's own and not included in a package. UMMUFB will at the least be on the 'highly recommended' list, if not included.

Time will tell what the best approach will be.

On a side note. I think PAX is also a 'slang' abbreviation for passengers, which is pretty apt in itself.

It is in the airline industry. I also think it's pretty apt.

We often did "PAX and PONY" transfers when moving our helicopter from one ship in the formation to another... On Sunday's we occasionally had the "Holy Helo", which carried the chaplain from one ship to another.

Regardless - - - Great work, great add-on.

how do you add it to your own base or vessel? I have the Centuri Base from Space 1999

What, Face, only 1000 places? :p

Good idea. I'm definitely going to give this a look when I get my installation back up and running.

Huh? Did I make a mistake? I thought I've set it to 100, since that's the limit of UMMU.

Cool Face. I was joking on the UCO thread that the next add-on was going to be a Holiday Inn for Orbiter. Now with your add-on, it looks like that might just be possible ;). I can send the crew in for crew rest, or even do crew rotations now. I will have to check it out later.

Cheers,

i downloaded what's at the link,(I have absolutely no idea what it is). But what i think is the problem is that the "PAX" MFD is missing.

Well, if the above link's content doesn't help you, I have no clue why it doesn't show up on your machine. Everywhere else it seems to work...

The link points to Microsoft's redistributables for Visual Studio 2008 VC++ runtime DLLs. Windows XP doesn't come with DLLs needed for plugins compiled with VS9. And since UMMUFB is compiled with this version of Visual Studio, it may cause the effects you mentioned.

Face
