What happens when I'm given a keyboard and literally any spare time at all to write.

Contains my own personal opinions, not those of the sites I represent unless stated otherwise. Literally no rights reserved, except for the fiction category, which you can share provided my name stays on it as author. Unless you totally rewrite something inspired by my work, which would be downright awesome and I'd be wonderfully happy about that.

Yeah, I totally forgot this thing existed again. Oh well.

It's been quite a year for me. I've met a new partner, had a new baby (bringing my progeny total to 3 now), moved house, changed jobs, and I'm in the planning phase of starting a business to undercut the service I already provide (because the price is wayyy inflated).

In short, much has changed, and I think at the moment all for the better. Things finally settled out long enough for me to practically sit down and "do orbiter" again, as my better half puts it; this could be either flying a launch or moderating someone here on the forum, it all comes under the same title. .

While some might appreciate this and others not, actively participating in a community takes a good deal of time and concentration - being a staff member in that community probably doubly so, really. I wouldn't pretend I read every post on the board (I think that's what we have Orb for) - but then I don't need to, since we're a staffing team rather than a bunch of individuals (who might have their own agendas on who to ban and who not, etc).

I love it, though. Particularly when the result is amicable, it reinforces the concept that we are making the right decisions and that the rules work and all the rest. When it's not, we look at the process and the rules and consider if we need to change them.

Honestly, 90% of the time the answer is "no". Because, yanno, head over to a hundred other forums on any topic and you'll see a broad spectrum of what's allowed and what isn't - what's being tried by various board owners and their staff, and if it works or not.

We remember M6, or at least I do. And the flaming inferno it became in the end. Alright, perhaps it's an example a little extreme, but I honestly believe the system we have ensures you get a fair deal even when you're being infracted (my defacto answer of just "BAN ALL THE FORUM" is thankfully ignored ), and that the rules we have give the staff the capacity to keep this place and its 8,000+ members happy, safe and able to use the board for its primary purpose.

This is just what I think, but it makes me happy to be part of the team responsible for the creation and protection of this community as it currently is, mostly (if you don't look in the basement anyway) flamewar free.

Here's to the board, to the staff and to all the members of it (yay sappy I know) - I love signing in here every day. Don't you?

What about installing some Admiralty three-drum boilers in the Bacement for powering the server?

Right on! (In fact, OF is one of the very few net sites I have "keep me signed in" checked for... )

Tut! We are a green forum, can't have pollution reaching the upper levels of the forum.

Great post Xyon. From my point of view it's humbling to be a part of the staff and fantastic to be part of the community as a whole.

It seems like you have a busy life. Xyon. Remember, family is very important, and so is your orbiter time. Don't let them conflict though.

Have a good life, and if you need to take a break, go for it. You've more than earned some PTO.

I'll be honest on this point - signing in has become more enjoyable since leaving the staff, and thus losing the ability to see the basement.

It's great to see you happy with your moderating duties, and great to see a clean, spam/flame-free forum (haven't had more than a few twitches from the mod-senses, 90% regarding oversized signatures...you fellows are fast as always.)

That's usually orb. Sometimes I swear he's just a vbulletin hack posing as an administrator. The man just sits listening to the GET requests coming into the server, waiting for the ones that don't add up quite right... 0-second response time.
