It was with great relief that Victor (Hugo) Patel watched the massive rocket riding on a column of flame and exhaust as it cleared the launch pad. The Energia stack looked somewhat ungainly and graceful at once as the stack began to pirouette towards the launch heading as directed by the flight computer. Eight minutes, Victor reminded himself, if I can make it eight minutes I’ll be OK. Behind him there was a team of people enjoying a mix of hamburgers, fries, hot dogs and bratwursts, as the Phantom...

Victor's Vignette

Posted 08-19-2013 at 09:41 AM by PhantomCruiser

Victor (Hugo) Patel leaned against the railing of the CSSC assembly building roof and did his best not to be awestruck. After several days with not enough sleep, he finally looked at the Energia rocket with its Buran-T payload container as it was crawling its way out to the big pad at Carl Sagan Space Center. Facilities personnel mixed about with RSC and Roscosmos people checking, rechecking and final checking every single item on a long punch-list of things that would need going over again...

Posted 07-22-2013 at 10:24 AM by PhantomCruiser

Posted 07-15-2013 at 09:52 AM by PhantomCruiser

“You must be out of your mind!” exclaimed Kirby “You don’t seriously think you can put up a fully functioning space station inside of thirty days?”
Victor Hugo finished the last of his shrimp fried rice and reached for another eggroll. “Not out of my mind, and yes it’s perfectly doable”. He paused long enough to search the small coffee table, finally finding a small bowl of hot sauce “Ah! Remember now, it’ll be functional, but far from complete.” Swirling the eggroll around in the sauce...

Phantom receives guests at Polygon

Posted 06-25-2013 at 10:17 AM by PhantomCruiser

John Kirby and Cleveland Davis stood just inside Polygon’s passenger terminal when the screeching of a hard-breaking golf cart diverted their attention towards the main doors. Maria Kolsov rushed in wearing her flight suit and flight bag, making a mad dash towards the woman’s restroom. A quick glance at each other with an implied shrug between them, they again watched the horizon through the massive terminal windows, looking for a speck to emerge out of the haze that would signal the arrival...
