Yes, a very nice collection. I did not know they also had the STS-1 checklists around, will take a look at them.

Why did NASA switch external tank colours? i think the white looked way better then the current orange one.

Not painting the External Tank white saved about 270 kg in weight. I believe it was actually some sort of fire retardant that was later found to be unnecessary. The rustic orange is the actual color of the insulation without paint.

They should just paint it white anyways, just to make us feel like were in the good old days, when John Young was still flying and he was still swearing on the lunar surface:clap:

If John flew it we paint it, that means it's gotta be a lot of paint hualed in, why couldnt he just retire from NASA when he walked on the moon like the rest of them.

Ken Mattingly didn't either. I forget which mission he flew for the shuttle, but it was one of the early ones. Fred Haise flew shuttle landings before it took of into space for testing, though he never actually flew one into space.

anyway, the CSM and LM John flew weren't painted, so you can't use that statement

They did have paint on them, but not the colour paint, some of the paint they used on the LM actually kept on peeling off during flight, that was just one of the annoyance even with the dreaded orange juice

Ken Mattingly flew both on STS-4 and STS-51-C as commander.

He only had a full crew on STS-51-C... also it was a DoD mission. During STS-4, the crew size was still 2.

ok, fine. But not the entire thing was painted like the external tank was. Either way, NASA does have a point in the paint being really heavy. 270kg is still a lot of weight, and when the ISS had to be constructed, a new tank had to be made because the old one was still too heavy even without that paint.
