I was wondering, we are using lots of different MFD's ie: Trans-X, Base sync, etc.... Which of all that we use are ficticious and which are actual real MFD's?

I suspect the vast majority are fictitious, with the probable exception of the Surface, Nav, HSI, VTOL (?) and Map MFDs.

Surface MFD is more of an aircraft MFD, HSI MFD is a bit basic (aircraft show them on the HSI) so they are ALL fictional.

That depends where do you draw the line between real and ficticious. There are many MFDs those aren't real but they do try to be as realistic as possible.
I doubt there exists any real world MFDs for a manned interplanetary missions. But there could exist some for a manned lunar misions. What kind of functionality would such MFD contain ? There is probably no need for trajectory design and optimization programs in the MFD, since, they could have a laptop on aboard with STK or some other software. Wouldn't it be cool if there were real astronauts stuck in space with a faulty ship's computer, and no communications. But some astronaut uses his cellphone to download orbiter and they run it to compute a trajectory back home..?

Considering that mobile phones require base stations to operate and the range on the ground is only a few miles it means they would never reach LEO.
Secondly, Spacecraft generally carry a varitey of communications systems (shuttle has KU and S Band, probably more). Thirdly, Onboard instrumentation can allow a commander controlled entry with no outside help. Finally, how would they get the state vectors into orbiter and how would orbiter help out? |
