I recommend this free desktop switcher for Windows. I'm able to run two separate installs of Orbiter simultaneously on an Intel Core2 Duo P7350 @2Ghz, 4000GB RAM, Nvidia 130M using it. My frame rates average 60 in both sims which were loaded with hi res planet textures, on dx9 RC39 client, with vistaboost. It was really smooth and seamless switching between each sim. I disabled mp3 in both Orbitersounds and used media player for that. The sounds from each just stick to their respective desktops. Run each Orbiter on adjacent desktops and switch between them with programmable hotkeys. Had no problem with my Saitek stick either. I just thought I would recommend this free app: Virtual Dimensions. Could run more than two with the right hardware..

4000GB RAM?
Holy moley! That's a huge boat load of RAM. That's 4Terabytes of RAM? How much did that cost you for that much RAM?

Why not just use this made by orb. Make sure to enable the module.

There is of course the risk, if your running both instances out of the same install, that the two Orbiters could try to access the same file at the same time.

All files opened by Orbiter are in read/write file sharing mode, so they can be opened multiple times by Orbiter either for read or write with no error. Generally, only mentioned earlier files are opened for read or write, and all other files, like files in Config, meshes, textures are opened only for generic read, so there's no problem with accessing them at the same time. The problem could be with add-ons, which can for example open their specific files (not handled by Orbiter) with incompatible file sharing modes. |

I usually come here at 3 or 4 am. 4000GB of RAM would make one hell of a ram drive though. As far as the instances go, I was running one from an Orbiter install on my laptop, and the other from an install on my WD Passport (an external HDD.) I keep all of my Orbiter downloads from the hangar on the Passport and a couple of compressed Orbiter installs (ie one for Rag Tag Fleet, a standard one with high level textures, etc.) The virtual workspaces prompted me to try running two.
