Creating a World

So, yesterday after work, a friend called me and started talking about his Dungeons and Dragons (DnD) campaign world that he's creating. Most of it went in one ear and out the other, but the one thing that stuck was the idea of creating a world. After I hung up, I thought "that'd be fun to make my own world..."
At 20:00, sleep deprived and running on sheer will power, I took out a pencil and a piece of paper, my mp3 player, and started drawing my "world". About an hour later, I had drawn three major continents with neighboring islands, two floating islands "like Hawaii", and an island-continent. The world name: Kanjamin (Kaan-ja-min). Then I proceeded to make my own "compass": instead of north-south-east-west, it's Roll-Antiroll-Spin-Antispin (respectively). The reason (and I know I'm shaming my orbinaut title with this): Kanjamin has no moon to stabilize itself, so the planet rolls over it's "north-south" axis as well as spins.
I decided to make each of the three continents controlled by three superpowers: Alderia (All-DUR-ee-uh), Cenvati (Ken-VA-tee), and Mentabuby (Men-ta-boo-BUY). The names come from the deep recesses of my mind, and a joint venture between random button mashing and sound-cool letter combos. Plus, i figure a new world would have a completely different language set. Look at the name difference between the US, China, Germany, Russia, etc. So, in my opinion, the names are legit.
I ended my initial think-storm at 23:30, just enough time to crawl into bed before waking up at 06:00 this morning for work.
My eventual goal with this is to detail everything so well that the average person would think that what I have written is an archive, not something I just made up on the spot. I also plan to draw capitol cities, the people, animals, plants, etc (I need to learn to draw first
)
What do you guys think of the idea of creating a world? Drawing it out, thinking of the history of everything, etc. I'd love to see more people do this, not just to show that I'm not going crazy, but to see what everyone thinks of: names, civilizations, interactions. We can call it Orbiter Forum Solar System, or OFSS...oh wait....Orbiter Forum Galaxy! I need sleep >_> *

I made a world once, drawing with pencil and paper. Cities, countries everything- I even go the scale down on a sinusoidal projection. That was mighty hard to do. Can barely remember it now, but if I find the map I'll tell more about it. I made languages to for the different races. It was a great way o pass time, but I haven't done it in a bit. I can recommend links if any care for them.Posted 07-25-2010 at 11:51 PM by fireballs619

I made a world once. I ended up using it in a full novel-length story.
It had two major continents, with an enormous North-South archipelago in the center of one of the two oceans.
The superpowers were Elania, Exii and a third one whose name I can't remember offhand (this was over a year ago and I haven't touched it since I finished.) There were 40 or so other countries, all with names and histories that stretched for 2 000 years, and a global history manuscript that stretched 24 000 years. It was really convoluted and hard to describe, so I'll leave it at that.
